ITGAIN announces the new version 4.2 release for Speedgain for DB2 that now includes features supporting "OS Monitoring for DB2 Server", workload oriented monitoring and DB2 pureScale. Speedgain V4.2 uniquely positions the DBA to effectively utilize IBM’s new DB2 v10 feature multi-temperature data management.
The latest version 4.2 of ITGAIN’s performance management solution
Speedgain for DB2 offers several extensions to improve the efficiency of database monitoring.
The extended OS Monitoring offers detailed operating system performance metrics and reports that act as the basis for an integrated root cause analysis. This new feature in conjunction with existing Speedgain database metrics delivers a complete and unified picture of the whole operating system and database together filling the performance reporting gap.
With workload oriented monitoring the user is able to choose from predefined workload categories and monitoring levels in respect to the different requirements of the database, e.g. SAP or OLTP systems. This minimizes the costs of monitoring as well as the overhead on the monitored system.
ITGAIN’s Speedgain V4.2 completely supports the new DB2 V10 feature multi-temperature data management functionality. ITGAIN, in a statement by Thomas Kalb, CEO confirms the vast potential benefit and sustainability of this V10 feature in the latest IBM presentation. Below an excerpt of this presentation¹ is given:
"The multi-temperature database management feature of DB2 V10.1 is great because the hardware world is not just RAM and hard disks. There are many types of storage options with different I/O speeds and prices. This feature allows administrators to make optimal use of these different devices, balancing expensive SSDs with cheaper SATA disks and everything in between. Using SSDs for indexes and logs and a SATA array for the data, we noticed fantastic improvements in I/O speeds, especially for synchronous reads. Additionally, the background movement of data between the storages groups is very fast."
Thomas Kalb, CEO ITGAIN GmbH
Speedgain's new Status Monitor shows the current state of all monitored servers and databases in one complete view. Combined with the workload oriented monitoring data centers with large number of databases can now be monitored more effectively.
Speedgain V4.2 also supports DB2 pureScale providing detailed information both for members and the cluster facility of a pureScale cluster.

Speedgain ready for pureScale
Specialists from ITGAIN and the IBM Labs in Toronto, Dublin, and Böblingen meet for a 3-day workshop to evaluate the capability of Speedgain to monitor IBM DB2 pureScale.
The team set up a new pureScale cluster and produced a high workload using the ITGAIN benchmark utilities. The goal was to find the perfect setup for DB2 pureScale testing for scalability and pureScale monitoring with Speedgain. Additional pureScale monitoring functionalty for future Speedgain releases was also discussed.
